¡°Well-being¡± Food High in Protein
Jangdan Beans and Bean Curd of Paju
The ¡°Jangdan bean¡± village in Paju, Gyeonggi Province is known to
produce the highest-quality beans.
The average temperature of the village which is 4 degrees lower than that of Seoul and fertile
soil make Jangdan beans savory and chewy.
Bean farming in the village had declined after the Korean War with the advent of in-
dustrialization.
The recent ¡°well-being¡± boom, however, has contributed to a revival of Jangdan bean farming.
Rich soil and
clean water near the Demilitarized Zone combine to produce some of the highest-quality beans in Korea.
The high demand for
Jangdan beans makes them far more profitable than any other comparable crop.
The village provides visitors with a full spectrum of
foods made from beans.
Bean curd (tofu) is very popular.
In fact, bean curd is the favorite bean food of most Koreans because it
is high in vegetable protein.
To make bean curd, beans are first boiled and ground.
The thick pulpous liquid is poured into a mold
and cooled to harden.
Visitors can participate in the hands-on program provided by the village to make your own bean curd.
you would like to purchase high-quality Jangdan beans at a discounted price, go to the Jangdan bean festival held every winter.
