The former Gimpo Catholic Church's floor plan is an auditorium-style church of the Latin
Crosswithnodistinctionbetweennaveandaisle.Theplanfeaturesabelltowerprotrudingfrom
thecenterofthefront,andconsistsofsevenhallbaysandone-bayofferingroomsandaltars.
Thetranseptislocatedinthesixthbay..Thefirstbayissetupwithahalf-on-dolfloorand
half-granite floor so as to allow for taking off shoes, and the second floor is equipped with a
choir.
Theouterwallswereroughenedtoaddnatural,weighty,rigidandstable.Eachbaydoesnot
haveabuttress,butthereisatwo-tierbuttresswallatthebelltoweralone.Thebelltowerhas
anoctagonalbulbousdome,thelowerpartofthebelltowerandfrontentrancearemadeofthe
semi-circular arch. The front bell tower consists of five floors: an entrance, two-story tower
body,abell-pavilionandadome,butthebellisnotcurrentlyhungunderthedome.Thenext
two floorshave twinwindowof pointed-archtype.Thelowerflooristhe entranceporchwith
semi-circular arch. However, the windows on the left and right sides of the wall are all
square-typewindows.
The granite that forms the outer wall is finished with horizontal rowed granite. The stone
facesweremachinedwithhump,theedgesofthewindowsanddoorsaremadeoflonggranite
stones.Undertheeaves,atwo-tieredlightmoldingisformed,andacopperplatedrainpipeand
adownpipedrainleaderareinstalledontopofthemolding.Theroofismadeofcopperplates.
ArchitecturalandhistoricalvaluesofTheformerGimpoCatholicChurchcouldbefoundinthe
development process of a series of mason churches having been built 1950s. This development
process includes a structural change from a pure mason building to concrete structures, from
spiral-type to bulbous dome and a vault-type ceiling to gable-type. Cultural heritages value of
TheformerGimpoCatholicChurchcouldbeevaluatedfollowings
First,thischurchispositionedinthemiddlestageofthedevelopmentprocessof1950smason
church and this church is the most fully matured building in terms of its decoration and
structuresinexpressingmasonbuilding'ssolidity
Second, configurational composition of bell tower where a bulbous dome is placed on a
rectangularplanetowerbodythroughtheoctagonalplanebelltowerisexcellentlydemonstrated.
Third, internal finish, roof shape changed in part but the original pattern of structures and
exteriorstyle,materialisconservedinitsoriginalstate.
Fourth,asthechurchareaislocatedattheurbancenteronahighhillandutilizedasacity
observation platform and a resting space. This church is playing a role of a landmark for the
historyandcultureofGimpo
